Description

Barnabas Collins painted by Ray Witter in 1972.
I would race home every day after school to watch
Dark Shaddows. It was my favorite show back then.
I was 13 years old, and fell in love with the Gothic Horror
story.

That this was done by you as a teen says so much. I watched from 1966-1971 and, like you, raced across the street from school to my home ('66-68), then jumped off of the bus and ran home ('68-'71). I watched the clock in the classroom, waiting for the bell to ring. And, like you, I drew and painted portraits of my favorite character...Barnabas Collins...especially in the year following the show's cancellation.

This is a treat because he looks like he's wearing the robes from when Frid played Lord Capulet in Romeo and Juliet, or perhaps they are those of Richard III. His eyes were riveting, and your youthful eyes captured the intensity of them. You did well with the rest of his face, finding the hollows and shadows that made his a delight to depict. The top of his head appears in shadow, or, is that a cap such as an 18th century gentleman might wear with his banyan in the early morning hours?

This appears to be painted in that thick, opaque tempera of old. I well remember it for my own posters of that era. If not, whatever medium you used was quite effective in conveying the darker shadows.

Thank you for this blast from the past.
